The creation of new boat designs to fulfill specific requirements  is  at the core of our companys capabilities. All of the stock boats  we offer were designed in house, and the designing of new boats is a service which we extend to our clientele. Often, it is not possible to find  an existing design which truly encompasses a customers needs,  and the prospect of investing dollars into what at the outset is only a compromise, generally results in an unsatisfactory final product.

Our principle designer is Jon Persson, who began learning the art, craft, and science of boat design at age twelve, under the critical and experienced eye of his father, Seth (who was a master boat builder and refined yacht designer). In the years since, Jon has designed everything from pulling boats to kayaks, open water rowing boats to motorboats, a motorsailer, a line of skiffs and work scows, and many more. The philosophy, ingrained and expanded upon over many projects, is simple; design the most elegant, practical, durable, efficient solution possible to a specific requirement or set of requirements.

    The process by which an idea becomes a finished design generally works as follows:

•     First, the client presents a list of requirements which the proposed design is to incorporate. This typically is accomplished via a number of conversations, letters, and e-mails, with the objective of establishing a clear understanding of what the client wishes to accomplish.
• Second, a preliminary set of sketches (or  cartoons ) are created, which demonstrate how the designer proposes to fulfill the requirements of the client s new boat. This is generally done in the form of a proposal, for which no fee is charged.
•     Third, an agreement is reached to proceed with the design, which includes: the level of detail the client requires; the costs involved in producing a finished design; payment schedule; and a time frame in which the design will be produced.
•     Fourth, upon receipt of a deposit, work commences on the actual design, starting with the lines drawing. The methodology of Jon Persson in creating a highly refined hull design is the result of many years of practical experience, and includes the use of half-models and penciled lines drawings, worked to a high level of accuracy, fairness, and proportion.
•      Fifth, detail drawings, depending upon the type of vessel, are produced. These include; construction drawings, deck and interior arrangements, sail and spar plans, engine diagrams, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, hardware details, and so on.
•      Sixth, offsets for  traditional  lofting are measured off; computer-lofting of designs will be available soon.
•     Seventh, consultation between the designer, builder, and client (assuming the vessel is not built at our facility) will continue throughout a project, to a degree agreed upon at the outset of the project.

Costs for producing a new design are based on an hourly rate of $45.00. In some cases, it is possible to establish a contract price for a design, though this naturally requires a clear agreement on the level of design work to be provided
