15' Little Swampscott

    Our Little Swampscott dory is  offered in response to a need for a  lightweight, open-water capable, easily rowed, comfortable boat for the novice or experienced rowers.
Measuring 15 feet by 4 feet beam, with a 1 foot 3 inch depth of hull, this boat has the size needed to provide a seaworthy, useable boat for any reasonable open water rowing conditions.
    The design of this boat is an absolute parrellel to the evolution of traditional Swampscott dories from the fisherman s Banks dory; The Banks dories, which were designed to be cheap to build, rugged, and carry a heavy load of codfish, were too cranky and tippy for use by inshore fishermen and recreational boaters. So, too, the many lightweight plywood renditions of Banks dories have proven to be uncomfortably unstable, and too cranky for the novice rower to enjoy and thus, remain in this sport of rowing. For these reasons, the various modified dories, with more shape to their hulls to provided stability and seakindliness, evolved and enjoyed great success and acceptance.

    So, too, did this design evolve. The dividing of the topsides into two strakes allows for enough additional stability to make this an easy and enjoyable boat to row, ideal for the beginner, with enough performance for the experienced. The standard arrangement of a longitudinal seatbox with moveable seat stations allows for use as a single or double, with adjustment for crew weights. Or, you can row as a single with passenger.

    Construction of this boat is of 1/4 inch Marine Fir plywood, with seam battens at the hull joints, and plywood frames  epoxy bonded to the hull. All joints are bedded in epoxy, with glass tape reinforcement, set in epoxy.
