Our 12 foot Catboat is a true representation of the classic catboat design, executed in multiple-chine plywood construction. Measuring 12 by 5 5 , this stable, roomy boat is ideal for beginners to learn to sail, and for vetearans to enjoy a classic experience under sail.
Construction is of 1/4 inch marine plywood on 1/2 inch plywood frames, which also form the deck beams, trunk supports, floors, and seat supports. Batten seam construction is used, to ensure a fair hull while allowing planking to be assembled in small, easily handled pieces. The entire hull and deck are sheathed in epoxy/fib erglass for increased strength and longevity.
The rig is a simple spritsail, with moderate yet sufficient area. Rudder and centerboard are glass/epoxied plywood. The coamings and rubrails are mahogony.
Building our 12 foot Catboat will require all of the nine days in our monthly Kitboat Class schedule, and possibly more besides (space is available between class sessions for a nominal fee).
